Testing and Commissioning

Electrical systems are designed to fulfil specified functions as well as comply with technical and regulatory standards. Before any electrical installation is put into service, it is vital to verify that the specified functions are being fulfilled, that the installation complies with relevant technical & regulatory standards and that the installation is safe for use. Effective verification can only be achieved through a well planned and executed testing and commissioning regime.

Intellect Automation offers professional testing and commissioning services that are backed by detailed reports. Our care does not stop at the commissioning phase; we work with our client to provide subsequent routine testing.

Earthing and Lightning Protection Systems

The fundamental purpose of an earthing system is to provide a safe return path for fault currents. When an earth fault strikes on a high voltage system, the fault current generates a voltage at the source of the fault. This voltage can be raised to dangerous levels, which can pose a hazard to personnel working within the compound and to members of the public nearby the high voltage asset.

The earthing system is designed and engineered to perform safely during earth fault conditions. However it is also critical that commissioning and routine testing is undertaken to validate and ensure safety.

Primary and Secondary Systems

Intellect Automation provides the following specialist testing and commissioning services:

  • Protection relays: Secondary injection for verification of trip settings and restraints. Primary injection for trip verification. Protection integration.
  • Energy meters: Secondary injection for verification of metering accuracy, update of registers and integration with other systems such as SCADA.
  • Rotating machines: Power generator excitation system compliance/performance check (voltage regulation, voltage range, V/F limiter, step response, reactive power capability, excitation ceiling, and excitation limiter).
  • Switchgear: Contact resistance, insulation resistance, power frequency voltage withstand, functional checks, interlocking, arc flash marking verification.
  • Instrument transformers (VTs and CTs): Ratio, phase deviation, polarity, burden, winding resistance, insulation resistance, primary injection for VTs and CTs as well as loop resistance and excitation for CTs.
  • Power Transformers: Ratio, polarity, phase deviation, winding resistance, excitation current, TanDelta.
  • Circuit Breakers: Timing, contact resistance, dynamic contact resistance, displacement curve, insulation resistance, power frequency voltage withstand, reduced voltage operation.
  • Power cables: Insulation resistance, VLF voltage withstand, partial discharge.
  • Hydro power plants: Load rejection. Heat run. Turbine governor frequency response and speed regulation checks. Timing, stroke, operating force and functional checks for hydro power plant auxiliary devices (intake gates, hill top valves, main inlet valves, guide vanes, nozzles, deflectors, relief valves).
